Storms of life hit us all. When you are found in one, remember the following principles.
1. Storms can reveal who you are, and who you think God is. 4:38 “Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Storms have a way of revealing our concept of God, and our true belief system. Notice all the different misconceptions that arose when the storm came.
a. They shouted- it revealed raw emotions, a sense of desperation, a concern for survival.
c. They said- “we are going to drown”. That phrase revealed the negativity that sometimes can accompany a storm. They had an “All is lost” perspective, that so quickly sets in.
2. Storms are a great way to let us know who really is in control. 4:38 “Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.” The disciples were experienced fishermen. They basically told Jesus: “We got this Lord”. You are a good teacher, but WE know how to handle boats. You can build them, maybe, but WE are expert drivers. We got this are dangerous words, and a fatal attitude. Why go through the drama, let Jesus lead!
3. Storms are a great way to experience God’s awesome power. 4:39 “When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.” If it wasn’t for the storms in our lives, there would be no miracles. If you find yourself in one today, stay alert, and experience his power.
Conclusion- Storms are rough. Jesus is stronger.
