Devotional for today- Legalism Exposed
Mark 2
Legalism can distort God’s truth and cloud God’s grace. When living out our faith, we must avoid the following 3 things:

1. A religion focused on others. 2:23 One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grain fields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat. 24 But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?” A legalist focuses his efforts in discovering other people’s sins. How did the Pharisees know the disciples where breaking the Sabbath unless, on the Sabbath, they were looking for Sabbath-breakers, instead of worshiping or sharing their faith? Jesus told us to love our neighbor and change ourselves, not vice-versa.

2. A religion focused on actions only. 2:24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” Notice the key word: DOING. The problem with focusing on acts is that actions can be manipulated. People can act righteous, while their character remains unconverted. A true follower of Christ works on character first. Actions change, when character is transformed.

3. A religion focused on the worst case scenario. 2:23 One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grain fields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat. 24 But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?” Legalists assume the worse. That’s why one of their favorite strategies is to demonize everything they don’t agree with. They are not interested in changing people, just exposing sin. They make no concessions, have no mercy. Jesus was different. He gave people the benefit of the doubt.

Conclusion. Don’t be a legalist. Focus on yourself. Change character first. Give the benefit of the doubt.
